Quik & Kurupt -- latest video

This is probably the best beat yet from this -- I'm really loving Quik's direction so far.

Suckas Come To War; Why? To Die!

88 rap-a-lot shit, Noz posted up the I Got 20 track a few months back. Shit I think it was around that time that I picked this record at Friends Of Sound. Anyways my favorite cut on the record is, Get From In Fronna Me. Royal Flush was another one of those groups that just kind of got lost in the Rap-A-Lot shuffle, they released 976-Dope in 91 but that was the extent. Instead rapalot decided to do bullshit like developing Choice's artistic vision. Someone needs to tell them to just bootleg their whole back catalog, fuck a sample clearance. Hell I'm sure somewhere someone's sitting on boxes of promos, ebay that shit. Ok so the point is I like this track

Get From In Fronna Me

electro stabs with some fast raps are one of the easiest ways to win me over. Yeah there are some suspect lines with the whole hickory dickory dock bit or the fu fu fu flamboyant shit, but the rest makes up for those corny moments.

Rulin, Schoolin & Coolin
There is so much shit going on in this beat, random cuts just drop in. It's kind of a mess but there is something beautiful about it. I guess it's more of just that cut & paste simplicity that dudes were using to just make beats. It was 88 in houston, no real guidelines just bang it out and rap on the best shit you got.

Weed & Champagne, that's the campaign

I'm really feelin these lifestyle raps from regular-dude rappers -- it seems so counter to what's particularly covered right now. I wrote more on this song here.

As much as I like getting into stupid arguments about what rappers were the GOATs or who's the king of which region, I think there's a real tendency to ignore huge swaths of rap that aren't even trying to engage in all the meta-narrative history building, and in the past couple of years, rappers who eschew that b.s. entirely dominate my listening. The thing that folks always ignore about Pac, Biggie, peak-period Jay-Z -- they were writing unpretentious, straightforward party/lifestyle raps all the time, even if they worked into a larger persona. Would Biggie have had the same impact without "Big Poppa"? Pac without "I Get Around"? Their careers werent dominated by thoughts of saving rap or some greatest-rapper/artiste-alive narrative that seems really important now to guys like Kanye & Wayne & late-period Jay-Z (never mind dudes like B.O.B. or Lupe or whoever else). One of the reasons I'm really enjoying new Gucci is that he's really having fun when he raps. He was quoted in an interview saying he doesn't even think he's one of the top ten rappers out right now. This quote is also fantastic:

If I put too much pressure on myself then I might not give the fans what they really want. I gotta have fun with it. They want me to have fun.

Thank u Gucci!!

My most-listened to rappers in the last couple years have been groups like the Beatnuts, DJ Quik, the Alkoholiks, Cypress Hill -- artists that always get love but are never really listed as greatest anythings ever. They just made quality unpretentious & highly musical party raps that always seem to express some particular joy.

Its with this in mind that I'm really digging this "Weed & Champagne" joint from Project Mayhem. They don't have a lot of songs out there (check the myspace), but this splits the difference between 90s Ski beats & good times swanky lifestyle party raps from regular dudes who just want to kick back & write some fun tracks. Beats rhymes & life.

Well this video sucks dick

the guitar solo at the end really completes the circle of sucks. There is so much bullshit going on in this video I really have nothing to say. I'd heard the song before but this video is stupid as fuck. White dudes in sweaters and glasses, black dudes doing air guitar, and frat house...great stuff. It's almost as shitty and predictable as an eminem video.

Talking With Innovative Street Terminology

Just digitized this MC Twist tape, it was his first joint after leaving Florida and Skywalker. He was repping East San Jose pretty hard on this shit, rollin like BART but riding Cal Train in his video. There is a lot of coke rap on this shit, who would have thought San Jose had it like that in 1990. Figure that's got to be more influenced by what was going down in the east bay than the south but who knows I'm just guessing. The best part of the whole tape is the first verse of What I Came 2 Do when they cut out the beat and he says "So to the curious you want a serious reply? I eat, make money, fuck hoes til I die." The last part of the line is probably his strongest delivery through out the whole album. Over all the tape isn't really that amazing but it's got some moments that made it worth grabbing. I don't know what Twist is doing these days, only thing I know of was an album that dropped in 97 and I think moved to Rocklin or some shit but other than that who knows what this he's up to anymore.

The warning on the tape is funny shit: "Unauthorized Reproduction or Duplication Will Get U Mopped Up!"

Troop 187

Go over to Ripped Open By Metal Explosions and check this dope post about Troop 187. It's a dope blog run by the homies Eons and Smooth Triumph. Lots of dope tapes and 12"s for the internets to find. peep game.

Doin All The Doin

Dj Paul needs to do more of this and less of that. The album drops today, it's got some dope tracks, a few softones but it's worth checking for.

He also needs a new graphic designer, I like Computer and all but who ever was behind this cover sucks. It looks like those fake old western photos you get at fucking Knottsberry farm or some other shitty park with fake cowboys and cotton candy.

Probably my favorite Gucci line of the year

Cuz we aren't tweeting yet.

"So Icey Boys, baby everything groovy/ hat to the shoes, baby everything Gucci"

Just totally love the fact that he says "groovy". It's a truly odd word choice and in a way I think it expresses unbridled joy better than maybe any other word could've in that situation. It's little things like that that make Gucci weird in a singular manner and not Weird in a Charles Hamilton/pink fetish manner (not to always pick on the guy, but) or Weird in a 2008 I'm Lil Wayne, the Alien Rapper manner. You can substitute compelling for weird, too.

A close second: "I can't even lie, yo/ I be fuckin fly hoes"

Haven't listened to Guccimania just yet— DJ Empire mixtapes are grating as fuck— but anyone who's slipped up Gucci-wise so far should download the Gucci the Glacier tape cuz it's got a bunch of his best shit from earlier this year— like the Juicy J and Project Pat songs— tacked onto the end.

Buraka Som Sistema

If these motherfuckers are playing near you anytime soon fucking go, the live show is fucking intense. I saw them in SF a couple weeks ago and the shit was fucking brutal, they fucking murdered the place. I couldn't stand the heat and just had to stand outside the club. People were dancing their asses off and just dripping with sweat all over the fucking place. It's just something you have to see if you get the chance, they are just none stop with it. Below is some video from their show in new york last night.

WHAT?

I am amazed by this, Xzibit is executive producing Awol One's next album. What in the fuck, I never saw that one coming. Souldoubt is one of my favorite records ever. I need to revisit homeboys catalog, I haven't been following his shit the last few years but I'll still check anything dude does. He is my favorite rapper out of all the ShapeShifters. Check the video below.

Fuck blogger's slow publishing ass

yeah I know this one has been making blog rounds since last week, but I've been out of town for a minute and meant to post it up. I didn't but still wanted to wave that flag of support for dude. People need to be checking for Playboy Tre, dude is dope. I first noticed him via the Dirty States of America dvd then ran into him at SXSW a couple years back randomly and got a mixtape off of him. Dope dude that people need to hear and I just want to state that I fuck with this dudes music and you should too. If you've been lagging cop the mixtape, it's worth it. I like Tre because he's got this uplifting outlook even when he's talking about depressing shit. He proves that you can be positive with your raps without sounding like a softhands. The motherfucker gives you hope in his songs, not many rappers do that these days.
